Sunday September 14. 27 new, 16 recaps. Erin Karnatz, assisted by Charley Eiseman, Ryan Kayhart, Coby Klein, Pat Lovallo, and Janice Marsden have a quiet day but enjoy three Philadelphia Vireos.
Monday September 15. 25 new, 16 recaps, new species Red-breasted Nuthatch. Another hot, humid day and not many birds migrating. Ryan bands his first Northern Cardinal - a newly fledged juvenile. We enjoy a visit from Dr. Paul Weld and Dick O'Hara. The RIT Great Lakes Environmental Science laboratory visits the station during the afternoon.
Tuesday September 16. 43 new, 9 recaps, new species Carolina Wren. Finally, some cooler weather but the wind quickly turns back to the SW. Bird of the day is Swainson's Thrush with 10 banded.
Wednesday September 17. 80 new, 9 recaps, new species Winter Wren, Marsh Wren, Bay-breasted Warbler. Our best day so far starts with an early morning visit by Jessie Barry, soon off to college in Washington state. We band 21 Common Yellowthroats!
Thursday September 18. 35 new, 11 recaps, new species Blue Jay, Swamp Sparrow. We spend most of the afternoon triple-tying our nets and tidying up our net lanes in anticipation of the remnants of Hurricane Isabel tomorrow.
Friday September 19. 1 new, 2 recaps. After expecting heavy rain and high winds, Isabel fizzles and we are able to set a few nets up in areas sheltered from the wind and at least get one bird for the day, a lucky White-throated Sparrow! The rest of the day is spent entering data.
Saturday September 20. 26 new, 12 recaps, new species Orange-crowned Warbler and American Goldfinch. Nothing exotic blows into the nets but two interesting birds flying by are a Northern Goshawk and a Pileated Woodpecker. A Connecticut Warbler (only the third of the season) accidentally released without a band nearly causes a grown man (Bob McKinney) to cry!
