Sunday May 11. 128 new, 14 recaps. It was an exciting day, dodging thunderstorms and tornado watches. We were only able to keep the nets safely open for part of the day but it was very active. New species were Great Crested Flycatcher and a Kentucky Warbler - only the second ever banded at Braddock Bay.

Monday May 12. 8 new, 2 recaps. It was a cold, rainy day and we were only able to open just a few nets for several hours. It was the first day of the Bander Training Class.

Tuesday May 13. 7 new, 4 recaps. Another cold, showery day - spring 2003 was trying the patience of all the banders and assistants.

Wednesday May 14. 40 new, 10 recaps. Finally, a rain-free day! Betsy Brooks, assisted by Patti O'Kane, Shirley Meston, Judy Engerman, Loretta Morrell and intern Ryan Kayhart banded the first Red-winged Blackbird of the season. The banders-in-training get their first experience handling nets full of feisty Blue Jays.

Thursday May 15. 85 new, 16 recaps. Ryan Kayhart bands the first Scarlet Tanager of the spring, a beautiful ASY female. Other new birds were Red-eyed Vireo, Mourning Warbler, Canada Warbler and Brown-headed Cowbird. A Syracuse University student films banding operations as part of her entry for "A Day in the Life of…" series.

Friday May 16. 15 new, 3 recaps. Another cold day and we are only able to open a few nets between showers but we capture the first Wilson's Warbler of the spring. Thanks to Patti O'Kane's and Shirley Meston's faithful net-checking, the BTC students are able to band a few birds.

Saturday May 17. 79 new, 12 recaps. Bob McKinney assisted by Linda Boutwell, Judy Engerman, Ryan Kayhart, Rodney Olsen, and Doug Smith band the first Swainson's Thrush of the spring.
