Sunday April 27. 15 new, 2 recap. Some of the nets were frozen at dawn, so we had to wait until mid-morning to open them. A House Wren was the only new species for the day with just 15 birds banded.
Monday April 28. 52 new, 6 recap. Betsy Brooks, Jon Dombrowski, Charley Eiseman, Chara Batchelder, Cindy Marino, Ann Adams, and John Lehr make a great crew. The wind finally switched to the SW but it is too strong, causing us to have to close some nets. We get the first Black-throated Green Warbler of the spring and a Fish Crow flies overhead as we begin closing nets for the day!
Tuesday April 29. 31 new, 7 recap. The wind is back to the NW and there are more banders and assistants than birds but ASY-F Delaney Ford keeps the banding crew entertained. We get quality rather than quantity with five new species: Mourning Dove, Blue-headed Vireo, Blue Jay, Yellow Palm Warbler, and Northern Waterthrush. Beaver Meadows Audubon Center Naturalist Bill Michalek joins the banding team.
Wednesday April 30. 20 new, 14 recap. A disappointing day with just 20 birds banded. It was a day for mending nets and doing the April summary. There were 407 birds banded and an additional 72 recaptures in April 2003. Among the noteworthy returns from previous seasons were a cardinal in its tenth year, a cardinal in its seventh year, and a Song Sparrow in its fifth year.
Thursday May 1. 223 new, 14 recap. Finally a good day! Nets had to be closed for over an hour when a thunderstorm rolled in about an hour after sunrise, but it rained birds and when we got the nets open again, we had our hands full. We banded 223 birds including the first Least Flycatcher, Nashville Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, Ovenbird, Lincoln's Sparrow, and Eastern White-crowned Sparrow of the spring. White-throated Sparrow was the bird of the day with 56 banded but the ASY male Blackburnian Warbler was the real highlight! Thanks to the amazingly efficient crew of Betsy Brooks, Kelly Dockery, Charley Eisenman, Anna Ludi, Carolyn Marrocco, Brian McGrath, Doug Smith, and John Waud.
Friday May 2, 2003. 24 new, 5 recaps. Rain cancels the early-morning banding but it begins clearing earlier than forecast. At mid-morning, after having sent all of the volunteers home, Betsy Brooks tentatively opens just four nets and the sun soon comes out. There are a lot of birds in the area. Twenty-four birds are banded in three hours. If all nets had been open it could have been another 200-bird day!
Saturday May 3, 2003. 30 new, 12 recaps. Bob McKinney, with help from Doug Smith and Kelly Dockery, bands 30 birds including a beautiful Yellow Palm Warbler.
