New species Cooper's Hawk, Least Flycatcher, Wood Thrush, Nashville Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Western Palm Warbler, Eastern Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, and Red-winged Blackbird. Gusty, warm SW winds bring us nine new species for the season. Dick O'Hara enjoys the sunshine and some of the first warblers of the season. Dave Woodruff, DEC Region 8 Biologist, arrives just as we bring in a feisty Cooper's Hawk from our nets. Ryan opens up a few nets two hours before sunset and we get our second Cooper's Hawk of the day, which ties Rodney Olsen's entire spring 1989 total!

Friday April 30. 194 new, 3 recaps. New species Great Crested Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, Red-eyed Vireo, Swainson's Thrush, Gray Catbird, Blue-winged Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Ovenbird, Kentucky Warbler, Common Grackle. A really big day, for so early in the season, with perfect temperature and winds, with the station's third-ever Kentucky Warbler in the first net-check, and later two Orange-crowned Warblers. Marilyn Guenther brings us 100 beautiful new bird bags she's made for us. We'll need them! Birds of the day are Blue Jay (27 banded), Ruby-crowned Kinglet (33), and White-throated Sparrow (47).

Saturday May 1. 40 new, 7 recaps. New species American Redstart, Common Yellowthroat. We enjoy a visit from Jack Duval and the LEAH home school group who enjoy seeing birds banded and who learn why it is important that we band and study them.
