Banding Summary: Week of May 16, 2004

Sunday May 16. 73 new, 11 recaps. We have a huge crowd for the Genesee Land Trust Open House with at least 150 visitors enjoying seeing the spring birds up close and learning about migration monitoring. We have 12 species of warblers including 9 American Redstarts. David Bonter was BIC assisted by Betsy Brooks, Pat Lovallo, Chris Villone, Dan Bushey and Ryan Kayhart, with several visitors helping with the scribing. 

Monday May 17.
62 new, 33 recaps. Cindy Marino is BIC with assistance from Shirley Meston, Peggy Fuller, Carolyn Moracco, Mark Deutschlander, Dan Bushey, Charley Eiseman, and Ryan Kayhart. Ann Adams examines the five Ruby-throated Hummingbirds we capture before releasing them. Courtney Rawleigh (The Harley School) begins her first week of a high school senior internship.

Tuesday May 18.
175 new, 3 recaps. New species Black-billed Cuckoo, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, European Starling, Lawrence's Warbler. We enjoy having the help of five of Rodney Olsen's students from the Diversified Occupations Center in Middlebury, VT. Charley Eiseman leaves for his summer job in Vermont. Bird of the day is Magnolia Warbler with 60 banded.

Wednesday May 19.
66 new, 24 recaps. The action slows a bit but we enjoy 9 warbler species. 

Thursday May 20.
246 new, 14 recaps. New species Eastern Wood-Pewee. The six students in our Bander Training Course are in charge of running the station today, under the direct supervision of the permitted banders. They come through with flying colors as we have our second-busiest day of the spring so far! Congratulations to the successful graduates Linda Boutwell (Rochester, NY), Margaret Hahn (Kalamazoo, MI), Jennifer Hanley (Tom's River, NJ), Suzanne Orrell (Geneva, NY), Keri Parker (Takoma Park, MD), and Barbara Wagner (Fairport, NY).

Friday May 21.
50 new, 17 recaps. Bird of the day is Yellow Warbler with 10 banded. 

Saturday May 22.
72 new, 14 recaps. New species Mourning Dove, Philadelphia Vireo, Blackpoll Warbler. With Bob McKinney back as BIC, it would have been a successful day even without any birds! Light showers held off until late morning. Assistants were Linda Boutwell, Virginia Duffy, Pat Lovallo, Ryan Kayhart, Doug Smith and Chita McKinney.
