Banding Summary: Week of September 18, 2005

See the weekly Banding Table

Sunday September 18. 109 new, 21 recaps, 21 species. New species Winter Wren. White-throated Sparrow is the bird of the day with 42 banded!

Monday September 19. 92 new, 18 recaps, 21 species. New species Orange-crowned Warbler. Another day with SW winds but we still get 92 birds with nice variety including 9 warbler species. Our first Orange-crowned Warbler of the season is a nice treat.

Tuesday September 20. 23 new, 13 recaps, 14 species. A slow day so we enjoy lots of Appalachian Trail talk with Doug Smith. Marilyn Guenther helps a new volunteer, Jill Pearce, learn to scribe. We always appreciate new volunteers.

Wednesday September 21. 103 new, 21 recaps, 22 species. New species Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. It's a good day even though the winds are still out of the SW. A pair of beautiful Northern Parula Warblers brighten up the morning and we share one with Dick O'Hara. We keep the shady back nets open for the Bander Training Class and capture late-day White-throated Sparrows - definitely the bird of the day with 54 banded.

Thursday September 22. 101 new, 20 recaps, 21 species. New species Bicknell's Thrush. Another hot day but late-day captures bring our totals up to 87. We band a nice variety of thrushes included 1 Veery, 5 Gray-cheeked, 1 Hermit, our first Bicknell's of the season, and 2 birds in the Gray-cheeked/Bicknell's Thrush overlap group.

Friday September 23. 72 new, 23 recaps, 26 species. New species Golden-crowned Kinglet. It is drizzly at dawn but the wind shifts to the NW finally and the sun comes out, and we have a better day than expected. It's nice having Lois Smith back. New scribe Sue Evans is a great help.

Saturday September 24. 130 new, 18 recaps, 25 species. New species White-breasted Nuthatch and Eastern Towhee. With the wind from the NNW, we do very well. It's a great crew with Mark Deutschlander, Kevin and Kelly Dockery, Jon Dombrowski, John Waud, Ryan Kayhart, Sarah Lazazzero, Pat Lovallo, Mike Burkett, and Jill Pearce. Bird of the day is White-throated Sparrow again with 41 banded but 11 each of Brown Creeper and Winter Wren is nice.
