Banding Summary:
Week of September 25, 2005 |
|
Sunday September 25. 0 new, 1 recap. We open a few nets during a break in the showers and get 1 recap, but then close for the day.
Monday September 26. 31 new, 9 recaps, 8 species; new species Sharp-shinned Hawk. It's rainy at dawn, so we wait until late morning to open just a few nets. As it begins to clear, we get a few birds including 22 White-throated Sparrows and the season's first Sharp-shinned Hawk.
Tuesday September 27. 243 new, 32 recaps, 24 species; new species Eastern Phoebe and Eastern Tufted Titmouse. The wind is finally out of the NW at dawn and we have an excellent day. It's the beginning of the kinglet movement and we band 23 Golden-crowned and 14 Ruby-crowned. It's also a fine thrush day with 1 Veery, 17 Gray-cheeked, 6 Gray-cheeked/Bicknell's overlap, 10 Swainson's and 12 Hermit. But the bird of the day is definitely White-throated Sparrow with 94 banded.
Wednesday September 28. 146 new, 36 recaps, 20 species. We have another good day that starts out with a gift of 24 Krispy Kremes!! We see more signs of a chickadee irruption starting with 13 banded today. Fifteen Yellow-rumped Warblers are nice as well as a late Yellow-bellied Flycatcher.
Thursday September 29. 21 new, 7 recaps, 8 species. We have a high wind warning at dawn so tell most of our volunteers not to come. We put a few nets in the afternoon in a sheltered spot and band 21 birds.
Friday September 30. 426 new, 12 recaps, 28 species; new species Marsh Wren. How many volunteers does it take to process 448 birds (426 new and 12 recaps)???? A VERY efficient staff (Linda Boutwell, Betsy Brooks, Mark Deutschlander, Kelly Dockery, Marilyn Guenther, Ryan Kayhart, Cindy Marino, Jane Miller, Jill Pearce, Jeanne Skelly, Ruth Stork, and BTC students Drea Basso, Heather Bradstreet, Sarah Lazazzero, and Rob van der Stricht) does a fantastic job. Bird of the day is the year's first Marsh Wren (our logo bird!). We band an astounding 135 Golden-crowned and 125 Ruby-crowned Kinglets.
Saturday October 1. 180 new, 64 recaps, 18 species. We have a lot of visitors for the Genesee Land Trust Open House and welcome Bill Kaiser back to the station. David Bonter is BIC with help from a number of Cornell
students and Lab of Ornithology staff. Mark Deutschlander, Ryan Kayhart, Marilyn Guenther and Virginia Duffy help all day. Bird of the day is White-throated Sparrow with 64 banded. Dozens of RBA, BBBO and GLT members help plant shrubs in the new land on the bay side of Manitou Beach Road.
