Banding Summary:
Week of May 15, 2005 |
|
Sunday May 15. 118 new, 8 recaps, 29 species; new species Indigo Bunting. Kelly Dockery and Erin Karnatz are
banders-in-charge with help from Dan Bushey, Ryan Kayhart, Coby Klein, and Pat Lovallo. Yellow Warbler is bird-of-the-day with 27 banded but the highlight of the day is the spring’s first Indigo Bunting.
Monday May 16. 60 new, 12 recaps, 27 species; new species Mourning Warbler. It turns cool again, so number of captures slows down again. Michael Burger of New York State Audubon holds a ‘press event’ to announce the publication of the second edition of Important Bird Areas of New York, in which the Braddock Bay Wildlife Management Area is included. Besides the press, representatives from the NYS DEC (Region 8), Genesee Valley Audubon, Braddock Bay Raptor Research and the Rochester Birding Association were in attendance.
Tuesday May 17. 56 new, 10 recaps, 16 species. The temperature at dawn is only 5 dg C not a good omen for the day ahead. We welcome six students from Rodney Olsen’s Science class from Middlebury, VT as well as members of the Retired Teacher’s Association.
Wednesday May 18. 113 new, 18 recaps, 29 species; new species Philadelphia Vireo and Red-eyed Vireo. It’s a better day and we capture 13 warbler species including 24 Yellow Warblers.
Thursday May 19. 91 new, 18 recaps, 28 species; new species Willow Flycatcher. The students from our Bander Training Class are in charge of the operating the station and do very well. We enjoy a visit from former Research Assistant Charley Eisemann as well as from Jon Dombrowski’s son Peter, a grad student at the University of Vermont. Gray Catbird is bird-of-the-day, with 16 banded. Charley does all the measurements and confirms that one of our “Traill’s” Flycatchers is a Willow!
Friday May 20. 57 new, 12 recaps, 23 species. Glen Wagner helps install our new donated PC and former BTC student and RIT grad Chara Batchelder spends part of the day with us. It’s another slow day.
Saturday May 21. 57 new, 7 recaps, 23 species; new species Mourning Dove, Hairy Woodpecker, Tennessee Warbler, and Blackpoll Warbler. David Bonter is BIC with assistance from Virginia Duffy, Megan Whitman, Sarah Goodwin, Ryan Kayhart, and Courtney Rawleigh. Blue Jay is bird-of-the-day with 11 banded.
