Banding Summary:
Week of May 22, 2005 |
|
Sunday May 22. 37 new, 11 recaps, 22 species; new species Cedar Waxwing and Orchard Oriole. A female Orchard Oriole is the highlight of the day!
Monday May 23. 96 new, 15 recaps, 32 species; new species Barn Swallow and Rough-winged Swallow. We enjoy a nice day with 32 species banded including several swallows. Bird of the day is Magnolia Warbler with 15 banded.
Tuesday May 24. 16 new, 7 recaps, 7 species; new species Bank Swallow and Tree Swallow. After the showers end, we observe several hundred swallows catching insects over the field so we set up our field nets. We only band 16 birds but eight of them are swallows including Tree, Barn and Bank.
Wednesday May 25. 28 new, 21 recaps, 17 species. Another cool, slow day, but at least the sun shines. Lois Smith brings our favorite lemon bars, and Linda Boutwell brings cheesecake! In the evening, we have our spring picnic. Later Louis E. Boutwell, Allan Klonick, and Vesta Rice are remembered in our Memorial Garden ceremony.
Thursday May 26. 124 new, 23 recaps, 33 species; new species Northern Parula and Bobolink. It may have been a disappointing spring, but, after a 30-year wait, Betsy finally bands a Bobolink today! We also band 17 warbler species including 22 Yellow Warblers and the first Northern Parula of the spring.
Friday May 27. 55 new, 8 recaps, 23 species; new species Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Alder Flycatcher, and Gray-cheeked Thrush. We finally get SW winds, but the totals are still disappointing. We enjoy a visit from Dr. Chris Norment’s SUNY Brockport Field Biology class.
Saturday May 28. 153 new, 31 species; new species Black-billed Cuckoo, Eastern Wood Pewee, and Clay-colored Sparrow. Bob McKinney is bander-in-charge and is assisted by Chita McKinney and Cindy Marino. They enjoy a good day and a great new bird – Clay-colored Sparrow!
