Banding Summary:
Week of October 8, 2006 |
|
Sunday October 8. 28 new of 15 species; 19 recaps. New species Fox Sparrow and Red-winged Blackbird. It’s a disappointing total for the day, but the first Fox Sparrow and Red-winged Blackbird of the season are nice, as is a late Indigo Bunting.
Monday October 9. 33 new of 9 species; 12 recaps. Cindy Marino is BIC. Hermit Thrush and White-throated Sparrow are co birds of the day, with eight banded of each.
Tuesday October 10. 70 new of 13 species; 10 recaps; new species Hairy Woodpecker and Eastern Towhee. It is great to have Hunter College grad student Coby Klein back banding with us for the day. Bird of the day is Ruby-crowned Kinglet, with 14 banded. But the first Hairy Woodpecker and Eastern Towhee of the fall season are even nicer.
Wednesday October 11. 13 new of 7 species; 3 recaps. It rains all night so our net lanes are sloppy again. We enjoy a visit from Dave and Sandy Junkin as well as students from the Christian Calvary School in Farmington.
Thursday October 12. 23 new of 12 species; 20 recaps. Another disappointing day, with mostly leaves in our nets! A late Nashville Warbler is our only bright spot!
Friday October 13. 27 new of 9 species; 13 recaps. We are on the eastern fringe of the big snowstorm that shuts down Buffalo, Albion and other lakeshore towns, and our nets have a dusting of snow on them at dawn. We open late, and only get 27 birds. The RIT students taking our Bander Training Course take their final exam, while the rest of us pick leaves out of the nets and close them!.
Saturday October 14. 10 new of 5 species. Bob McKinney, with help from Chita, had another disappointing day, with only 3 hours of banding before the rain shut us down.
Note: BIC = "bander-in-charge"
