Tuesday September 12. 10 new of 5 species; 12 recaps. Jarred Bennett begins work on the building of a new kiosk for his Eagle Scout project. The kiosk will be located near our Memorial Garden and will feature information on plantings that benefit birds. Gary Herbert helps with data entry for us in the afternoon.

Wednesday September 13. 8 new of 6 species; 15 recaps. It is a rainy start to the day, but we are able to raise nets for about five hours starting in the late morning. Three American Goldfinches are the birds of the day. Dr. Rachel Muheim, of Virginia Tech, joins us for a collaborative research project with Dr. Mark Deutschlander investigating orientation cues in the nocturnal migration of White-throated Sparrows.

Thursday September 14. 1 new; 3 recaps. It is the first day of the R.I.T. Bander Training Class with nine students and one faculty member, but it rains most of the day. We are able to raise a few nets when the rain stops, and at least we get a Least Flycatcher – our only new bird of the day!!

Friday September 15. 62 birds of 19 species; 26 recaps. Jon Dombrowski is BIC and we have a better day. The first net check of the morning yields two beautiful Connecticut Warblers! We band nine Red-eyed Vireos and two Philadelphia Vireos as well as 10 warbler species including 15 Magnolia Warblers.

Saturday September 16. 126 birds of 26 species; 11 recaps; new species Blue Jay, Brown Creeper and Winter Wren. David Bonter is BIC and it is a busy day with visiting students from Sara Morris’ Field Biology class at Canisius College and students from Mark Deutschlander’s class at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. A beautiful hatching year male Cape May Warbler is one of the highlights of the day along with an after hatch year female Northern Parula Warbler.
