See the weekly Banding Table

Sunday September 24. 8 new of 7 species; 12 recaps. It’s a miserably slow day, with too much wind, and from the wrong direction.

Monday September 25. 293 new of 34 species; 8 recaps; new species American Woodcock and Tufted Titmouse. Our biggest day so far starts with a beautiful American Woodcock at sunrise! But with all the kinglets in our nets, we hardly have time to enjoy it! We band 89 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 31 Golden-crowned Kinglets and 41 White-throated Sparrows along with a beautiful Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, eight warbler species. An excellent crew makes this a memorable day, thanks to Betsy Brooks, Ryan Kayhart, Marian Klik, Cindy Marino, Harold Mills, Rachel Mulheim, Ruth Stork, and Rob van der Stricht.

Tuesday September 26. 241 new of 20 species; 10 recaps. Bird of the day is clearly White-throated Sparrow, with 71 banded!! Ryan Kayhart does an excellent job as BIC for the first time! Four Northern Flickers are a treat. It is an outstanding thrush day with 24 Gray-cheeked, 21 Gray-cheeked/Bicknell’s, 17 Swainsons, 11 Hermit, and 1 Wood Thrush banded!

Wednesday September 27. 73 new of 18 species; 21 recaps; new species Bicknell’s Thrush. Erin Karnatz is BIC with help from Delaney and Rowan along with Linda Boutwell, Kelly Dockery, Justine Parada, and Dee Weber. Our first Bicknell’s Thrush of the season is a treat; we enjoy a visit from Dr. Richard Shearman’s RIT Environment and Society class.

Thursday September 28. 18 new of 7 species; 1 recap. The rain holds off for an hour so we are able to open a few nets and band 18 birds. Later, we houseclean the “boathouse” and enter data!

Friday September 29. 337 new of 26 species; 14 recaps. At dawn, we have a Virginia Rail by the net near our parking lot – but no luck in catching him! We do get another American Woodcock but can hardly enjoy it with all the nets full of kinglets. We band 13 squirmy Winter Wrens along with 130 Golden-crowned and 106 Ruby-crowned Kinglets and also a beautiful hatching year female Sharp-shinned Hawk.

Saturday September 30. 200 new of 28 species; 31 recaps. Ryan Kayhart is BIC with help from John Waud, Rachel Muheim, Aaron Fields, Sonny Bleicher, and Marilyn Guenther. It was a great kinglet day with 63 Golden-crowned and 58 Ruby-crowned banded. Girls Scouts from Cathy Muller’s troop visit and enjoy the birds.

Note: BIC = "bander-in-charge"
