See the weekly Banding Table

Sunday April 23. 90 new of 16 species; 16 recaps. New species Blue-headed Vireo, Tufted Titmouse, Nashville Warbler, Eastern Towhee, Rusty Blackbird. David Bonter is BIC with assistance from Chris Betrus, Sarah Goodwin, Aubris Pfeiffer, Scott Wolcott and Ryan Kayhart. Bird-of-the-day is Ruby-crowned Kinglet with 48 banded!

Monday April 24. 23 new of 4 species; 9 recaps. Jon Dombrowski is BIC. It’s cool and drizzly at dawn so we wait and set up just a few nets later in the morning. We get 9 Golden-crowned Kinglets to brighten up the day!

Tuesday April 25. 36 new of 13 species; 8 recaps. New species Sharp-shinned Hawk, Black-and-white Warbler. We close nets early when a cold front moves through the area in late morning. We spend part of the day house-cleaning the banding room.

Wednesday April 26. 179 new of 7 species; 27 recaps. New species Northern Waterthrush. This is a day to test our patience and cuticles. We band 179 birds but 150
of them are chickadees!!!!! This chickadee ‘invasion’ is the return flight of last fall’s irruption. But it is very localized as other banding stations on the north shore of Lake Erie (southwest of Braddock Bay) are not seeing high numbers of chickadees. Dr. Rich Sherman’s Environmental Science class from RIT visits the station.

Thursday April 27. 202 new of 15 species; 12 recaps. New species Red-breasted Nuthatch, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Common Grackle. But it is the first 200+-bird day ever in April, thanks to 131 chickadees and 39 Ruby-crowned Kinglets.

Friday April 28. 76 new of 9 species; 10 recaps. Kelly Dockery brightens the morning with a beautiful bouquet of spring flowers. Bird-of-the-day is still chickadee with 58 banded. After we close the nets, some of the crew begins painting inside our new house.

Saturday April 29. 51 new of 6 species; 16 recaps. New species Intergrade Flicker. Jon Dombrowski and John Waud are BICs with help from Ryan Kayhart, Peggy Keller, and Shirley Meston. Bird-of-the-day is our first Intergrade Flicker – just the fifth spring intergrade in 20 years.
