See the weekly Banding Table

Sunday April 30. 70 new of 16 species; 16 recaps. New species Lincoln’s Sparrow. We captured our second Intergrade Flicker of the spring along with 29 chickadees and 33 Ruby-crowned Kinglets.

Monday May 1. 90 new of 20 species; 18 recaps. New species Least Flycatcher, Wood Thrush, Yellow Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Western Palm Warbler. We band 4 Sharp-shinned Hawks! Seven species of warblers are banded including the first Yellow, Black-throated Green and Western Palm Warblers.

Tuesday May 2. 99 new of 15 species; 7 recaps. New species Brewster’s Warbler and Chipping Sparrow. The beautiful Brewster’s Warbler is bird-of-the-day. We are still getting our daily supply of chickadees – another 32 banded today.

Wednesday May 3. 62 new of 7 species; 7 recaps. Four Kodak ‘Day of Caring’ workers volunteer to spread much-needed gravel on our trails. THANK YOU to Steve Cox, Dave Killius, Julie A. Lewis and Ray Mack. Stefan Hames and Jim Lowe from Cornell’s Laboratory of Ornithology install three listening devices in our field. They will automatically record the nocturnal vocalizations of migrants flying over the area for the rest of May. Bird-of-the-day is Ruby-crowned Kinglet with 37 banded.

Thursday May 4. 125 new of 18 species; 4 recaps. New species Warbler Vireo, Blue-winged Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Eastern White-crowned Sparrow. With SW winds, we get a good push of migrants including 7 Western Palm Warblers. An environmental science class from Monroe Community College visits the banding station in the afternoon.

Friday May 5. 53 new of 23 species; 8 recaps. New species Eastern Bluebird, Orange-crowned Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Gray Catbird. Richard Carstensen, a visitor from Alaska who photographed our banding station several years ago, returns to GPS all our net locations. Eastern Bluebirds are infrequently captured, so our beautiful female is bird-of-the-day.

Saturday May 6. 66 new of 13 species. New species Northern Parula and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Bob McKinney is BIC with much appreciated help from Rodney Olsen, Ryan Kayhart, Zack Stone, Dave Mathiason and Pat Lovallo.
