See the weekly Banding Table

Sunday May 14. 73 new of 24 species; 21 recaps. At last!!!! The bird of the day is Ruby-throated Hummingbird with 7 banded. After taking a special training course from Bob Sargent in West Virginia, Erin Karnatz has been permitted to band them.

Monday May 15. 128 new of 29 species; 17 recaps. New species Philadelphia Vireo, Tree Swallow, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Swainson’s Thrush, and Worm-eating Warbler. We welcome members of the Allyn’s Creek Garden Club. Rachael Muheim, a post-doctoral research associate at Virginia Tech, joins Mark Deutschlander for a discussion of possible collaboration on orientation in White-throated Sparrows next fall.

Tuesday May 16. 66 new of 24 species; 29 recaps. The day begins with showers, but we gradually open nets at the skies clear. Yellow Warbler is the bird of the day with 14 banded.

Wednesday May 17. 128 new of 36 species; 23 recaps. New species Traill’s Flycatcher and Bobolink. We reach a milestone … today we band our 1000th chickadee of the spring. We also capture a lovely SY male Bobolink in the top of one of our aerial nets! Chris Gates talks to the students about his Tree Swallow banding research and education project. And John Waud and Omar Gordillo give a presentation on their research in Chiapas, Mexico.

Thursday May 18. 134 new of 29 species; 18 recaps. New species Nelson’s Sharp-tailed Sparrow. Carol Southby brings some lovely additions for our Memorial Garden.

Friday May 19. 141 new of 28 speces; 28 recaps. New species Gray-cheeked Thrush.
We enjoy a visit from SUNY Brockport grad Sue Smith, now working on her Ph.D. at the University of Rhode Island. Doris Waud photographs the activities at the station. The six Bander Training Students successfully complete the course. They are Omar Gordillo of Chiapas, Mexico; Ember Jandebeur of Newport, PA; Adam Kneis, N. Java, NY; David Mathiason of Webster, NY; Leanna Twohig of North Chili, NY and Karen Velas of Woodland Hills, CA.

Saturday May 20. 26 new of 15 species; 7 recaps. New species Tennessee Warbler and Savannah Sparrow. David Bonter is BIC with help from Ryan Kayhart, Zach Stone, and Chris Betrus, with Janis Dickinson, Walt Koenig, Caren Cooper, and Sarah Goodwin visiting from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Ann Adams, now of Albuquerque, NM, joins us for a week of hummingbird banding. Ann also learned to band hummingbirds from Bob Sargent. Strong winds (25-35 mph) from the northwest are to blame for the limited number of birds.
