Banding Summary:
Week of May 21, 2006 |
|
Sunday May 21. 192 new of 30 species; 9 recaps. New species Black-billed Cuckoo. It’s the beginning of a spectacular week of banding. We band 15 warbler species including 34 Magnolia Warblers. Two Orange-crowned Warblers are a treat as is our first Black-billed Cuckoo of the season.
Monday May 22. 121 new of 30 species; 46 recaps. New species European Starling. Students from Rodney Olsen’s science class at the Diversified Occupation Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury, VT begin a 2-day visit. And we are also pleased to be joined by Dave Junkin of North Java, NY. In the evening, the BBBO Board of Directors holds our first meeting in our new home!
Tuesday May 23. 114 new of 31 species; 54 recaps. New species Blackpoll Warbler and Brown-headed Cowbird. After a great morning of banding, including 16 warbler species, we hold a special ceremony to present Ryan Kayhart with his own banding sub-permit – just issued by the USGS Bird Banding Lab! Betsy and ‘Mr. O’ are especially proud of Ryan for his hard work and expertise. We celebrate with a beautifully decorated congratulatory cake.
Wednesday May 24. 151 of 39 species; 25 recaps. We say goodbye to our visitors from Vermont. Two Cape May Warblers are especially beautiful. Erin and Ann band 5 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. In the evening, we hold our annual picnic for volunteers, which is followed by a Remembrance Ceremony in our Memorial Garden. Jennifer G. Lindley and Ruth Shone are remembered with remarks and stories from friends and family. Thanks to the Garden Committee, we have many native flowers and shrubs in bloom!
Thursday May 25. 378 of 43 species; 7 recaps. New species Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Acadian Flycatcher and Eastern Wood Pewee. With south winds during the night, this is the day we’ve been waiting for and our nets are full at our first check 15 minutes after sunrise. We are short staff so we are grateful for the quick response of Jeanne Skelly and Nancy Chevalier to come scribe for us. Besides Nancy and Jeanne, the efficient staff was Kelly Dockery, Doug Smith, Ann Adams, Rob van der Stricht, Mark Deutschlander, Betsy Brooks, and Paul Fehringer (from Beaver Meadows Audubon Center in North Java). When we add up the day’s tally, we have banded 378 birds of 43 species, including 44 American Redstarts, 40 Common Yellowthroats, 32 Magnolia Warblers and 30 Black-throated Blue Warblers. This is the best spring day since May 10. 2004 when we banded 472 birds of 38 species.
Friday May 26. 80 new of 22 species; 10 recaps. We open a few nets when the showers begin to clear out of the area. There are lots of birds around and even with one-fourth the nets open, we manage to band 80 birds including 6 hummingbirds.
Saturday May 27. 115 new of 30 species. Bob McKinney is BIC with help from Barb and Jack Duval and Chita. It’s a nice day with great variety! And when the totals are added, we have banded
1,147 birds for the week!
