Week of May 28, 2006 |

Sunday May 28. 161 new of 36
species; 20 recaps. Bird-of-the-day is Wilson’s Warbler with 18 banded – one of 12 warbler species banded today. We also band eight Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, bringing our spring 2006 total to 43 thanks to Ann Adams and Erin
Karnatz.
Monday May 29. 238 new of 40 species. New species Gray-cheeked/Bicknell’s Thrush and Yellow-breasted Chat. Chita McKinney and Jeanne Skelly are great assistants for BIC Bob McKinney as we have our third 200+ bird day of the season. Highlights are the first Yellow-breasted Chat of the spring as well as 16 other warblers species including 26 American Redstarts, 24 Common Yellowthroats, and 20 Wilson’s Warblers.
Tuesday May 30. 126 new of 22 species; 14 recaps. Jon Dombrowski is BIC with much appreciated help from Doug Smith, Jesse Roberts and Donna
Hilborn. It’s a huge Cedar Waxwing day as we band 32 of them!
Wednesday May 31. 136 new of 28 species. Another great day with 21 Traill’s Flycatchers, 13 American Redstarts, and 6 Indigo Buntings banded! Bob McKinney is BIC with help from
Chita, Donna Hilborn and Marilyn Guenther.
Thursday June 1. 117 new of 29 species; 16 recaps. Another excellent 100+ bird day (one of 26 100+ bird days this spring!!!) We band 39 Cedar Waxwings and 20 Traill’s Flycatchers with John Waud
(BIC), Mark Deutschlander, Jesse Roberts, Doug Smith, and Ruth Stork helping.
Friday June 2. 42 new of 17 species; 14 recaps. It’s the final day of our intensive daily banding, so we begin taking down nets. Mark Deutschlander is BIC and we band 11 Blackpoll Warblers, the most captured of this species on any day this spring. The cumulative total now stands at 5233 birds banded of 96 species. This is the second best spring total ever – only spring 2000 was better with 5644 birds banded (including 555 Black-capped Chickadees).
The top ten species banded in spring 2006 are 1014 Black-capped Chickadee, 524 Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 299 Gray Catbird, 296 Magnolia Warbler, 256 Yellow Warbler, 237 Common Yellowthroat, 230 American Redstart, 151 White-throated Sparrow, 128 Wilson’s Warbler, 112 Traill’s Flycatcher and 112 Black-throated Blue Warbler.
