Sunday May 7. 112 new of 16 species; 21 recaps. New species Ovenbird. The chickadees keep coming – we banded another 49 today!

Monday May 8. 146 new of 23 species; 13 recaps. New species Veery, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Cape May Warbler. We get a beautiful after-second year (ASY) male Cape May Warbler in the first net check – a great start to the day! Six students begin their two-week Bander Training Course.

Tuesday May 9. 30 new of 16 species; 9 recaps. Although the winds are south at dawn, it is disappointing day with only 30 birds banded. We enjoy a visit from Tom LeBlanc and his friend Jordan, and from Bill, Sandy and Lisa Podulka from Ithaca.

Wednesday May 10. 162 new of 30 species; 7 recaps. New species Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Blackburnian Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, Wilson’s Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Baltimore Oriole. After a slow start at dawn, we suddenly have nets full of birds. Highlights include 15 Baltimore Orioles – a record one-day number and 30 Yellow Warblers. Best of all, Erin Karnatz, newly permitted to band hummingbirds, bands our first Ruby-throated Hummingbird!

Thursday May 11. 103 new of 23 species; 4 recaps. New species Mourning Dove, American Redstart, Mourning Warbler, Purple Finch. Showers threaten several times during the banding day but we still are able to band 103 birds. Carol Radford spends several hours entering data into our Bandmanager database.

Friday May 12. 116 new of 34 species; 4 recaps. New species Great Crested Flycatcher, Red-eyed Vireo, Golden-winged Warbler, Canada Warbler, Indigo Bunting. Harold Mills from Ithaca joins us for another great day of banding. We band 16 warbler species including the first Golden-winged and Canada Warblers of the season. It’s good to see Bill Kaiser as he stops by the station in the afternoon.

Saturday May 13. 126 new of 27 species. Bob Marcotte signs copies of his new book “Birds of the Genesee” while Bob McKinney bands with the assistance of Ryan Kayhart, Chita McKinney, Zach Stone, Harold Mills, and Pat Lovallo. It’s a great day for Magnolia Warblers with 26 banded!
