Sunday
October 5. 207 new of 21 species; 34 recaps. The NABC
testing ends by mid-morning and Trainers Betsy Brooks
(NY), Mary Doscher (NJ), Anthony Hill (MA), David Holmes
(MD), Erin Karnatz (NY), Sara Morris (NY), and Hannah
Suthers (NJ) join the regular Sunday staff for an exciting
day of banding. Golden-crowned Kinglet is the bird of
the day with 57 banded.
Monday
October 6. 185 new of 24 species; 32 recaps; new species
House Finch. Cindy Marino is BIC. White-throated Sparrow
is bird of the day with 45 banded.
Tuesday
October 7. 146 new of 24 species; 21 recaps; new species
Eastern Towhee. Former Field Assistant Peter Doherty
joins us for a busy morning of banding. Carol Southby
visits at lunch. Ruby-crowned Kinglet is bird of the
day with 40 banded, and our first Eastern Towhee of
the season is a treat.
Wednesday
October 8. 137 new of 16 species; 42 recaps. Kelly Wicks
joins us as an excellent scribe. Linda Boutwell brings
home-made, luscious lemon-raspberry cheesecake. Golden-crowned
Kinglet is again bird of the day with 45 banded, but
three Northern Flickers caught at the same time (all
different age classes) are a real treat.
Thursday
October 9. 55 new of 10 species; 20 recaps; new species
Northern Saw-whet Owl. Kelly Dockery works on our gardens
all morning. It’s a warm, Indian summer day, with
fewer birds. White-throated Sparrow is bird of the day
with 20 banded. Later, we open up a few nets after dark
and catch two beautiful Northern Saw-whet Owls.
Friday
October 10. 87 new of 15 species. Ryan Kayhart is BIC;
the RIT bander training students take their final exam;
bird of the day is White-throated Sparrow with 40 banded.
Saturday
October 11. 106 new of 14 species. Erin Karnatz is BIC;
bird of the day is Hermit Thrush with 33 banded, but
a late Chestnut-sided Warbler is nice.
