Banding Summary: Week of September 20, 2009

See the weekly Banding Table

Sunday September 20. 43 new of 14 species; 7 recaps.  New species Orange-crowned Warbler.  Bird of the day is White-throated Sparrow with 14 banded.  Another huge flock of starlings congregates over our field and about 150 settle into the 40 aerial net!  Luckily, most of them escape by themselves so we ‘only’ banded 10 of them!

Monday September 21.  23 new of 11 species; 9 recaps.  New species Blue Jay and Golden-crowned Kinglet.  Bird of the day is again White-throated Sparrow with 10 banded.  Another slow day … we definitely need some winds from the north!

Tuesday September 22.  22 new of 11 species; 13 recaps.  New species White-breasted Nuthatch.  We dodge showers most of the day and are grateful we have weather radar on the laptop to keep us on top of things.  Dominic Sherony spends most of the morning checking data from past seasons for our proposed monograph on bird wing measurements and mass from all the captures at the banding station since 1997.

Wednesday September 23.  26 new of 16 species; 9 recaps.  Rowan and Delaney spend the day with us and Betsy enjoys a walk on the beach with them.  Another hot, humid day with few birds, but a female Hooded Warbler is nice.

Thursday September 24.  90 new of 29 species; 20 recaps.  New species White-crowned Sparrow and Slate-colored Junco.  Birds of the day were Common Yellowthroat and White-throated Sparrow with 10 banded of each.

Friday September 25.  166 new of 24 species; 15 recaps.  Bird of the day is definitely White-throated Sparrow with 50 banded.  Trainers and Candidates begin arriving for our weekend North American Banding Council (NABC) Certification session.  Dr. Greg Cunningham from St. John Fisher joins us at the banding table.  The RIT class gets lots of hands-on experience with White-throated Sparrows.

Saturday September 26.  98 new of 25 species; 18 recaps.  Bird of the day is again White-throated Sparrow with 30 banded.  We conduct NABC exams and evaluations all day until the rain moves in.  We have 11 NABC Trainers participating – Betsy Brooks (NY); Mark Deutschlander (NY); Mary Doscher (NJ); Anthony Hill (MA); David Holmes (MD); Richard Joos (Toronto, Canada); Erin Karnatz (NY); Bob Leberman (PA); Bob Mulvihill (PA); Hannah Suthers (NJ); Bob Yunick (NY).
