| Sunday May 17. 83 new of 26 species; 20 recaps. Bird of the day is Magnolia

Monday May 18. 76 banded of 20 species; 23 recaps. Bird of the day is Yellow Warbler with 13 banded. Brad Mudrzynski, BTC graduate, presents a talk to this year’s BTC students on his research at Oak Orchard. Visiting Pennsylvania bander Ember Jandebeur begins her second week with us.
Tuesday May 19. 159 new of 28 species; 16 recaps. Bird of the day is Magnolia Warbler with 31 banded. We have a big day with 11 species of warblers.
Wednesday May 20. 178 new of 39 species; 14 recaps. New species are Gray-cheeked Thrush, Northern Parula and Blackburnian Warbler. Birds of the day are Gray Catbird and Magnolia Warbler with 19 banded of each. The first few net checks are excellent. Dominic Sherony begins playing recordings of Alder and Willow Flycatchers to our newly-banded Traill’s Flycatcher, but is unable to get a response from any of them to differentiate individuals by species.
Thursday May 21. 148 new of 30 species; 23 recaps. New species are Black-billed Cuckoo, and Blackpoll Warbler. Bird of the day is American Redstart with 26 banded. Today the BTC students run the station and do an excellent job. Doug and Ian Clark visit from Alfred for the day; and we have students from the Calgary School in Farmington visiting during the morning.
Friday May 22. 137 new of 36 species; 17 recaps. Bird of the day is Gray Catbird with 22 banded. Kyle Horton, a student of Sara Morris’ at Canisius College, joins us for 4 days of banding. Leslie Stoltz, a bander from Big Sky, Montana, visits for the day. The BTC students take their final exam; congratulations to Agatha Marie Windig (Rochester, NY), Kelly Wicks (Rochester, NY), Jennifer Landry (Rochester, NY), Rachel Bricklin (Armonk, NY), Victoria Cadby (Chestertown, MD), Nate Grosse (Brockport, NY), Martyna Boruta (Geneva, NY), Peggy Keller (Rochester, NY) and Nancy Keppel (Rochester, NY) who all successfully completed the course.
Saturday May 23. 92 banded of 24 species; bird of the day is American Redstart with 14 banded. We band 13 warbler species and puzzle over a thrush resembling a cross between a Swainson’s and Gray-cheeked Thrush. We have now banded 27 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds this spring. |
