| Sunday May 3. 118 new of 28 species; 4 recaptures. New species Chestnut-sided Warbler and Brown-headed Cowbird. Bird of the day is Ruby-crowned Kinglet with 44 banded. David Bonter is BIC and has a good day for the many visitors from the Lab of Ornithology’s Spring Field Ornithology class.
Monday May 4. 55 new of 14 species; 8 recaptures. Bird of the day is Ruby-crowned Kinglet with 21 banded. Field Assistant Karen Velas arrives from California to spend 10 days helping us and entering data.
Tuesday May 5. 37 new of 13 species; 13 recaptures. New species Wood Thrush. Bird of the day is Ruby-crowned Kinglet with 19 banded. The Chili Senior Citizens club visit and enjoy a nice variety of warblers.
Wednesday May 6. 46 new of 18 species; 6 recaptures. Bird of the day is White-throated Sparrow with 8 banded. We host 23 4th grade students from the Fairbanks Road School BOCES program who learn about stopover ecology and bird banding.
Thursday May 7. 10 new of 7 species; 2 recaptures. We have rain at dawn so delay opening any nets for 2 hours. It’s a good day to enter data.
Friday May 8. 250 new of 38 species; 3 recaptures. New species Warbling Vireo, Magnolia Warbler, American Redstart, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, and Baltimore Oriole. Birds of the day are Ruby-crowned Kinglet (50), White-throated Sparrow (49) and Myrtle Warbler (45). Southwest winds give us a spectacular day of banding including the first male Indigo bunting and Baltimore Oriole (a feast for the eyes!).
Saturday May 9. 153 banded of 35 species; 4 recaptures. New species Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Swainson’s Thrush, and Wilson’s Warbler. Bird of the day is Ruby-crowned Kinglet with 21 banded. Bob McKinney is BIC with much appreciated help from Chita, Karen Velas, Ryan Kayhart, Greg Lawrence, Mark Deutschlander and Amy Finfera. We have many visitors in connection with the International Migratory Bird Day celebration.
